The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association Selects Puerto Rico as its 2023 Convention Destination

The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association announced today that it will present its 2023 Global Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a destination that stands out in the Caribbean for its lively LGBTQ+ scene and commitment to diversity and inclusion. The host city selection carries even greater impact as IGLTA will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year and has not held a convention in the Caribbean since 1985.

“After an extensive process of analyzing and discussing very competitive bids, we are proud to choose Puerto Rico, a destination with diversity in its DNA, as the host for our 40th Anniversary Convention in September 2023,” said IGLTA Board Chair Felipe Cardenas. “Puerto Rico offers a unique blend of Spanish, Taino, and African heritages, which are reflected in its vibrant arts, music, and cuisine. Holding our signature educational and networking event there provides the great potential of making a strong, positive impact not only on their local LGBTQ+ communities, but on LGBTQ+ tourism throughout the Caribbean.”

Discover Puerto Rico began its work in the LGBTQ+ segment in parallel with the DMO’s launch in 2018. A year later, baseline research showed 19% of LGBTQ+ travelers identified Puerto Rico as an LGBTQ+ welcoming destination. In 2020, that number increased to 41%. The Island achieved this success through a strategic embrace of best practices and the LGBTQ+ community, working in partnership with LGBTQ+ agency HospitableMe. Noting education as the first step toward change, the DMO provided their teams with training around LGBTQ+ language, imagery, the market, history, biology, and evolving Industry standards for how to make LGBTQ+ people feel more welcomed and included.

Dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where all travelers can live out their travel dreams, Puerto Rico is honored to be selected as the host destination for the IGLTA 2023 Global Convention,” said Leah Chandler, CMO of Discover Puerto RicoWith core values of collaboration and representation, our DMO welcomes this opportunity to invite the global LGBTQ+ travel community to take part in an educational and transformative experience alongside our on-Island partners.”

The island also provides a beautiful natural setting for tourism professionals from around the world to explore: 300 miles of coastline; the only rainforest in the United States forest system, El Yunque; three of the world’s bioluminescent bays; and many other sustainable activities.

IGLTA’s board of directors determines each year’s host city through an extensive bidding process that considers the association’s diverse membership as well as the destination’s support for LGBTQ+ tourism, its desire to grow that presence, and efforts to expand DEI initiatives. IGLTA has held its premier event in the Caribbean only once before—also in Puerto Rico.

IGLTA Foundation Introduces Transgender Advisory Group to Improve Resources for Gender-Diverse Travelers

Transgender Day of Visibility)—The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association and the IGLTA Foundation celebrate transgender and gender-expansive people, in all their diversity, for their empowering contributions to societies across the planet. We strive to eradicate the discrimination that still prevents many gender-diverse individuals from living openly and fully as their authentic selves.

As part of this commitment, the IGLTA Foundation has formed a global advisory group to help the association create better resources to support gender-diverse travelers. The dynamic group includes Jacob Anderson-Minshall, Editor-in-Chief, Out Traveler; Renato Braga, Account Manager, Amadeus Brasil; Gabrielle Claiborne, CEO, Transformation Journeys Worldwideauthor/advocate Dr. Elijah Nicholas; Alejandra Palma, Commercial Manager, Chile, Condor Travel; Rachel Reese, CEO, Global Butterflies; Diane Rodriguez, Founder, LGBT Chamber of Commerce of Ecuador; Stevie Tran, Founding Partner, Tran Arrowsmith; and Bella Thanakarn Vongvisitsin, Founder, LGBTIQ+ Tourism Asia

“We are very aware of underrepresentation in travel, whether it’s overall marketing that fails to include transgender and gender-diverse travelers or lack of visibility in our business network,” said IGLTA President/CEO John Tanzella. “We need to develop more inclusive resources to help tourism professionals better understand the needs of transgender and gender-expansive clients.”

“There are so many safety issues and concerns specific to transgender and gender-diverse travelers that need to receive more attention globally, and we want to ensure that the tool kit we develop is informed by those we wish to serve,” said IGLTA Foundation Board Chair Theresa Belpulsi.

Please join us in elevating trans and gender-expansive people today, Transgender Day of Visibility, and every day. If you’re interested in joining this group or would like to refer a new member, please email info@igltafoundation.org.

IGLTA Shares DEI Strategies for a Stronger Global Tourism Industry

A new report from the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association Foundation unpacks some of the key approaches to boosting diversity, equity, and inclusion across the tourism industry—and why it matters.

The report, “DEI Strategies for a Stronger Global Tourism Industry” is now available as a free resource at IGLTA.org/Research. It uncovers some of reasons for socially responsible growth across the travel market, and practical ways DEI can help build both successful businesses and stronger communities.

“As global tourism returns, now is a perfect opportunity for travel and tourism companies of all sizes to expand their DEI efforts,” said IGLTA President/CEO John Tanzella. “Prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion is the right way for businesses to foster respect among employees, partners and clients. IGLTA is proud to help its members and partners learn about and invest in this vital approach to socially responsible growth.”

Behind the report was an esteemed group of thought leaders who gathered as part of an IGLTA Foundation Think Tank at the 2021 IGLTA Annual Convention in Atlanta. More than 30 participants joined the discussion, including members of destination-marketing companies, local and regional governments, tourism- and workplace-advocacy groups, and Fortune-500 corporations. It was sponsored by marketing firm Simpleview and hosted by international law firm King & Spalding.

The report explores the “DEI journey” as an effective approach to attracting top talent, boosting productivity and stoking innovation. Among its key takeaways are recommendations that leadership coaching, supplier diversity, intentional skill-building, and management accountability all contribute to the long-term benefits of DEI.

Due to its global breadth, the tourism industry in particular can help promote greater understanding of local cultures and social issues, involve local communities in tourism decisions, support authentic travel experiences, and positively support diversity in a destination. All are considerations worth examining for any travel company seeking to drive responsible tourism through its own cultural competence.

Township speedsters lace up for Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon

A promising pair of runners from the Western Cape township of Fisantekraal will be Lining up at the start of next week’s Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon thanks to their participation in a development programme for talented runners between the ages of 12 and 23.

Several young runners from the programme have represented Western Province at school level, and many could represent South Africa when coordinated funding becomes a reality.

Waldi Robinson, 17, will be taking a crack at the half marathon for the first time, while Ralph Pietersen, 40, takes on the ultra for the sixth time.

“I’m really excited and nervous at the same time. It’s my first 21km ever,” said Robinson.

“Running is something that has always been part of my lifestyle and has motivated me in different ways, not just in running but in my life. It has taught me that nothing is impossible if you put the work in,“ he added.

The development programme, For the Long Run , is helping to break generational cycles of gangsterism, poverty, drugs and crime for the 12 500 residents of Fisantekraal through a collaboration between the community, Totalsports and Adidas.

The initiative has created a safe space for young runners to participate in a coordinated training programme set up by husband and wife team Christine and Gehard Le Roux. The runners are fuelled with refreshments and snacks by Vida e Caffe and clothed in the necessary kit.

“Waldi is very talented and came in the top 20 at the Tyger Run 10km recently, in 37 minutes. Ralph will be running the ultra marathon and this is his sixth time,” said Christine Le Roux.

“He loves running and wants to make a positive contribution in the Fisantekraal community. His dream is to become a running coach there,” added Le Roux.

“I would love to see a Sports Centre established here, where these kids can progress to guiding and mentoring kids in the future. We want to see our runners empowered and impassioned by their success, that they channel that into leadership within this community and change it, fundamentally, a decade from now,” she said.

“We are committed to making running accessible to all South Africans, no matter the goal, distance, or motivation for running,” said Totalsports Head of Business Jonathan Stein.

“Totalsports has worked with incredible partners who support this vision over the last 20 years. Together, we have impacted thousands of lives around South Africa.”

In just a week, all roads will lead to the much-anticipated Totalsports Two-Oceans Marathon after a two-year absence. The iconic race has particular significance for the newcomer title sponsor, Totalsports. It is the start of their first year of sponsorship, but it also marks their 20th anniversary in uplifting the sport in disadvantaged communities.

Totalsports also sponsors the Phantane running club, promoting the development of elite athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds. Members of the club who are expected to participate in the 2022 Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon include KZN marathon champion Bonginkosi Zwane and 2:11 marathon runner Sboniso Sikhakhane, in the ultra marathon, and Mbuleli Mathanga in the half marathon.

Vodacom Western Cape hands over 257 new cold chain units valued at R3.6 million to Western Cape Provincial Government to boost vaccine storage and distribution

To support the drive for effective COVID-19 vaccinations in South Africa, Vodacom and the Western Cape Department of Health are pleased to announce the distribution of 257 new cold chain units, worth R3.6 million, across the province. The equipment enables the Western Cape Department of Health to boost COVID-19 vaccine storage and distribution, particularly to more remote areas, while maintaining vaccine efficacy. The handover took place today at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town with Western Cape Premier Alan Winde in attendance.

This comes after Vodacom Group and Vodafone Foundation donated R74 million in the procurement of cold chain equipment, ensuring the safe delivery and administration of COVID-19 vaccines and other life-saving medicine, to several countries in sub-Saharan Africa. South Africa has received 2 197 units of this essential equipment in the fight against the pandemic. The units will get distributed across all nine provinces.

The 257 cold chain units donated to the Western Cape Province consist of six vaccine freezers, 40 ice-lined vaccine fridges, 80 cooler boxes, 125 electronic temperature loggers, two remote temperature devices and four remote probes. The equipment is being distributed to 51 sites across all six districts of the province: Cape Town Metro Municipality, Cape Winelands District Municipality, Central Karoo District Municipality, Garden Route District Municipality, Overberg District Municipality and West Coast District Municipality.

“As we continue to partner with the government in response to COVID-19, Vodacom wants to assist all South Africans in overcoming the challenges of the crisis. Through the investment and distribution of cold-chain equipment throughout the Western Cape, we are ensuring citizens have greater access to safely stored vaccines. This is a critical step towards building an inclusive post-pandemic future,” says Carol Hall, Managing Executive, Vodacom Western Cape.

The Premier of the Western Cape, Alan Winde, said: “I want to commend Vodacom for their significant and generous donation of new cold chain units throughout the province, ensuring that more people get access to life-saving COVID-19 vaccines. As we exit the National State of Disaster and Disaster Regulations come to an end, each of us needs to assume greater personal responsibility. We can do this by practising the golden rules of good hygiene. We should also protect those at risk of severe disease, by acting responsibly. Getting vaccinated is also the right choice to make so that we save lives and jobs.”

Cold-chain management is a crucial part of ensuring a safe and effective inoculation drive. Vaccines require uninterrupted refrigeration which meet certain temperature requirements, from the place of manufacturing until the point of administration. If the cold-chain is broken at any point from arrival to administration, this may affect the effectiveness and efficacy of vaccines, which means they become potentially unsafe for immunisation.

Vaccine storage is a challenge for various countries on the African continent. A recent survey of 34 African countries by the African regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that, in 31% of countries, more than 50% of districts have challenges with cold-chain capacity.

“The distribution of cold chain equipment supports the national vaccination programme in ensuring vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities in the Western Cape region have access to safe vaccines. Moreover, the equipment can also assist government beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, with the storage and distribution of other life-saving medicine. This supports Vodacom’s social contract to help better the lives of people through technology,” adds Hall.
