IGLTA Honors: Pinnacle Award 2018

TORONTO The International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association is pleased to confer its prestigious Pinnacle Award for 2018 to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, during its 35th Annual Global Convention in Toronto (9-12 May).

The Pinnacle Award recipient is selected by the Chair of the IGLTA board of directors and presented to an individual or business that has made the world a more welcoming place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender travelers. Board chair Juan Julià, founder and president of Barcelona-based Axel Hotels, will make the presentation

“I am incredibly proud to extend this IGLTA Honor to Prime Minister Trudeau. He presides over a country with some of the world’s most advanced LGBTQ rights, but instead of resting on those credentials, he makes it a personal point to vocally support our community and keep moving our issues forward,” Julià said. “There is no doubt that LGBTQ travelers are respected and embraced in Canada, and that welcoming message is amplified every day through his actions as prime minister.”

Trudeau’s time in office has carried consistent messages of support for the LGBTQ community. In November 2017, he led the Canadian government in issuing a formal apology for a program of discrimination against LGBTQ Canadians (1962-1996) that was accompanied by US$85 million in reparations; this emotional address to Parliament elevated the global conversation on human rights. Trudeau also was the first Canadian Prime Minister to march in a Pride Parade (Toronto, 2016.)

In an interview with UK’s Attitude magazine, Trudeau said, “The LGBT+ community has become emblematic of the fight for human rights. The fact that so many people have gone for so long feeling that they had to be ashamed or hide about their core identity to fit into society is a lesson for everyone to push against.”

The Pinnacle Award is part of this year’s IGLTA Honors, presented with support from Visit Philadelphia.  For more information, please visit iglta.org/convention.

The IGLTA Annual Global Convention would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Presenting Level – Disney Destinations ©, Tourism Toronto, NYC & Company; Official Level – AIG Travel, Inc., Air Canada, Destination Ontario, Embratur, Fairmont Royal York, Greater Fort Lauderdale CVB, Israel Ministry of Tourism, Italian National Tourist Board, Vienna Tourist Board, Visit Britain, Visit FLANDERS, Visit Philadelphia®, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater; Conference Level – Belmond, Canadian Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Hornet, Los Angeles Tourism, Pride Media, Silversea Cruises, Visit West Hollywood.

SuperSport Rugby Challenge to capture audiences – Round 1 Preview

SuperSport Rugby Challenge to capture audiences – Round 1 Preview

A host of new players, coaches and venues will again highlight the SuperSport Rugby Challenge in 2018, when this exciting and ground-breaking competition kicks off this weekend.

It is the second year of this rugby extravaganza, which connects communities with their rugby heroes like no other, and will see the first of five Rugby Festivals again taking the game to the doorstep of those who follow it so passionately.

DHL Western Province, who won the inaugural title in front of a packed home crowd at Florida Park in Ravensmead, Cape Town last year, will again be one of the favourites to claim the overall crown, but one thing learnt from that campaign, was that nothing can be taken for granted in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge.

The defending champions will be part of the first Rugby Festival, on Sunday at the Wolfson Stadium in Kwazakhele, outside Port Elizabeth. Two other teams in the South Section, Border Bulldogs and Boland Cavaliers, will provide plenty of thrilling action as well, with the traditional Gold Cup qualifying match between local clubs Progress and Gardens ensuring the stadium will be packed from early on.

Last year, a number of provinces from smaller cities delivered good wins over the bigger, metropolitan unions, and with matches again played over the length and breadth of South Africa and in Namibia, rugby will be back in the heartland of the country.

The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias scored a famous win over the Hino Valke in Windhoek last year and will again add international flavour to the opening round, with the same two teams battling it out in the North Section. The iCollege Pumas and Vodacom Blue Bulls will be the other two in the North Section to battle it out, in Nelspruit.

The Central Section last year proved to be hugely competitive and two of the early favourites, Tafel Lager Griquas and Cell C Sharks XV meet in Kimberley, while the Leopards will host the Down Touch Griffons in the North West town of Schweizer-Reneke.

For a couple of teams, new coaches will learn quickly that no result is a given. Six new coaches will get their first taste of rugby at this level, two of them former Springbok Test players.

Former Springbok assistant coach Ricardo Loubscher will take charge of the Cell C Sharks XV, while Daan Human will use his international experience as a player to add that extra one percent to the Toyota Free State XV.

Herkie Kruger will coach the Xerox Golden Lions XV, David Manuel will looking for glory with the Vodacom Blue Bulls and it will also be a proud start to the competition for Ryan Felix (EP Elephants) and Tiger Mangweni (Border Bulldogs), as they will coach the teams they played for in their heyday.

The iCollege Pumas also have former SA Rugby Coach of the Year, Jimmy Stonehouse, back from a stint in Japan and in a new role of Director of Rugby.

Understanding digital evolution at WTM Africa 2018

Change has become such a constant in the digital world that it is no longer possible to identify coming trends or technologies. Instead successful businesses exist in an environment of constant evolution driven by the needs of their market. In travel this is even more true. So how do both destinations and travel businesses move, learn from, and evolve with the new connected traveller?

This sentiment is what will lay the foundation for this year’s E-Tourism Africa Summit (eTAS) hosted at WTM Africa 2018. The summit will take a deep dive into the technologies affecting how travellers book and enjoy their trips and how the travel trade can keep up.

Hosted in the WTM Africa Inspire Theatre on Friday, 20 April 2018 at WTM Africa, eTAS will once again feature well-known travel technology speakers, lead by Damian Cook, CEO of E-Tourism Frontiers.

Chardonnay Marchesi, South Africa Portfolio Director for Reed Exhibitions’ Travel, Tourism & Sports Portfolio, says of the summit: “Each year, the demand for travel technology speakers, and even exhibitors, rises for WTM Africa. In 2018, eTAS will focus on the platforms and technology that aids in digital marketing, daily operations and what trends are important to take note of moving ahead.”

Speakers for eTAS at WTM Africa 2018, will include:

  • Theresa Emerick, Nightsbridge
  • Erryn Gracey, Twitter
  • Amanda Owen, Expedia
  • Velma Corcoran, Airbnb
  • Eran Feinstein, Direct Pay Online
  • Lee Geldenhuys, Snapchat

“The online travel world has experienced immense change over the past year – both in how people are researching, booking and then sharing their stories. We are planning to show a snapshot of change at eTAS this year at WTM Africa. We want to challenge and inspire and we want to show how tourism businesses can make small changes to how they operate and communicate online – so that these changes can reap rewards. It’s never been more important to stay up to date,” explains Damian Cook, CEO of E-Tourism Frontiers Ltd.

In addition to the programme available at eTAS, WTM Africa will facilitate further sessions on travel and technology including a session with Keith Jenkins, CEO iambassador, that will delve into how best travel brands can work with social media influencers and how to orchestrate a successful influencer marketing campaign.

WTM Africa, now in its fifth year, is on track to deliver another outstanding travel trade show at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 18 – 20 April 2018.

WTM Africa 2018 to highlight investment in Africa

WTM Africa 2018 is excited to announce its inaugural WTM Africa Tourism Investors’ Forum, a platform dedicated to connecting ministers of tourism from countries across the continent, with eager investors.

The Tourism Investors’ Forum will take place on Wednesday, 18 April in the WTM Africa Conference Theatre from 10h30 – 11h15. The theme for the 2018 WTM Africa Tourism Investors’ Forum will be ‘Unlocking the Tourism Potential of Africa’.

Chardonnay Marchesi, South Africa Portfolio Director for Reed Exhibitions’ Travel, Tourism & Sports Portfolio, says of the Investment Forum: “We are expecting a number of high-profile tourism representatives, from a number of countries in Africa, to attend this highly engaging forum. We hope to provide them with an opportunity to meet with a number of local and international investors in search of investment opportunities in the travel and tourism sector in various countries in Africa.”

The launch WTM Africa Investors’ Forum will host keynote speakers who will contribute their learnings, expertise, and unpack various investment opportunities Africa has to offer, not just in the travel and tourism sector, but also in lateral sectors that contribute to the industry. Speakers for the session include:

  • Lance Greyling – City of Cape Town’s Director of Trade and Investment
  • Akwasi Agyeman – Ghana Tourism Authority CEO
  • Assita Kone – Mangalis Hotel Group: Director of Sales and Marketing
  • Adrian Gardiner – The Mantis Collection, CEO and Chairman

The session will be moderated by industry stalwart, Thembi Kunene-Msimang, Executive: Marketing and Communications for The Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa (RETOSA).

Kunene has over 18 years executive management experience in the tourism sector. Prior to her current position at RETOSA, she was responsible for Tourism Services at Cape Town Tourism. Before that, Thembi was the CEO and Chief Quality Assurance Officer for the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) and a member of Exco at South African Tourism (SAT).

As a continent, Africa has shown phenomenal potential in the tourism and travel sector with increased investment in infrastructure from both the public and private sectors. WTM Africa, too, has seen this growth through the considerable increase, particularly in sub-Saharan exhibitors.

WTM Africa has confirmed a range of first-time of exhibitors to its floor from Madagascar, Botswana, Ghana, Tanzania, Namibia, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe.

Managing Director for the Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB), Devota Mdachi, explains that in light of the World Bank’s recommendation for a new tourism strategy for Tanzania, TTB has opted to increase its presence and participation at various trade shows around the world with the view of promoting the country’s tourism sector, boost its image as a welcoming tourism destination on the continent, and thereby by attract investment opportunities in the sector.

Mdachi says: “Some of the goals for this greater participation of Tanzanian public and private sectors in WTM Africa include among others: exploring new markets (discovering market niches), assessing the overall competitiveness of the African tourism sector, increasing brand awareness, forging successful partnerships with local and international markets, spotting new trends and increasing visitor volume to Tanzania. And with many predictions forecasting even higher tourism growth for Tanzania in the coming years, the country’s participation in WTM Africa is definitely set to reach even greater heights in the years to come.”

WTM Africa, now in its fifth year, is on track to deliver another outstanding travel trade show at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 18 – 20 April 2018. In addition to travel trade in attendance, WTM Africa will see representation from major tourism associations and industry bodies from across the continent including:

  • Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA)
  • The Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (FEDHASA)
  • Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO)
  • Southern African Association for Conference Industry (SAACI)
  • Association of Southern African Travel Agents (ASATA)
  • Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa (RETOSA)
  • Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) and Kilifair
  • Africa Travel Association (ATA)

Sports & Events Tourism Exchange 2018 begins to take form

Following on the announcement at WTM Africa 2017 that Africa Travel Week is collaborating with the established Sports & Events Tourism Exchange (SETE), foundations are being firmly laid to bring about a successful and fruitful event for 2018.

SETE 2018 aims to educate and create discussions around bidding and hosting major international events, promote and grow local events. The SETE conference will attract global and local experts in event tourism and is expected to lay the foundation that will allow African countries, stakeholders and suppliers to develop international events strategies.

Chardonnay Marchesi, South African Portfolio Director for Reed Exhibitions’ Africa Travel Week, says of the event: “SETE is the only event of its kind in Southern Africa and provides a platform that brings together businesses from the sports, events and tourism industries. In 2018, SETE will host its seventh edition and with it, a number of buyers that have successfully brought events to Africa in the past.”

Sports tourism has been recognized by UNWTO as the fastest growing tourism sector contributing more than 450 billion euros globally in 2014. There is a gap in the market to provide local event organisers and sports industry stakeholders with a platform to showcase their services and network amongst their peers. Leveraging off the WTM Africa platform, these suppliers can ensure they are maximising any tourism opportunities around sporting events.

Marchesi furthers: “The platform has consistently encouraged collaboration between the sports, events and tourism sectors. The need for these sectors to co-exist is becoming critical, and certainly influences the broader economy of the country.”
